Options for Chin Augmentation or Reduction

from our Columbus Plastic Surgeon

Chin implant surgery is accomplished using chin implants to augment an underprojected (or weak) chin or by repositioning the lower part of the jaw bone forward (osseous advancement genioplasty). A chin reduction is performed to reduce a prominent chin, by removing excess bone or repositioning the lower part of the jaw bone backwards (osseous setback genioplasty). Some may call this "chin shortening surgery" or "chin shaving surgery" as well.

Not ready for surgery?

Dr. Okada also offers non-surgical chin augmentation in Columbus Ohio, which is a good option for patients seeking a long-lasting solution but not ready for genioplasty.

CHIN AUGMENTATION AND REDUCTION: CONCERNS & EXPECTATIONS

Your Questions, Answered

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT CHIN AUGMENTATION & REDUCTION SURGERY

Will this procedure hurt?

Because surgery requires an incision and disruption of muscle and tissues to place the implant, or the removal of bone, there will likely be some discomfort as you heal. Pain medication and compresses can be used to alleviate the post-surgical pain, but pain should be very manageable after a few days.

What are the possible side effects or risks of chin augmentation surgery or a chin reduction?

Any surgery carries some risks. Dr. Okada will review these with you ahead of the procedure, and gain your consent on several forms. Possible risks might include:

  • Anesthesia risks

  • Asymmetry

  • Bleeding

  • Displacement of the chin implant

  • Tissue damage or death

  • Infection

  • Lumps

  • Poor or slow healing

How long will recovery take?

Most patients require less than two weeks of recovery, after which they return to their regular lives. It is recommended that patients wait until after six weeks to begin strenuous activity, however.
